And so many antics: a slave strike, demanding better working conditions, an assassination attempt by Poison cake (which Obelix makes delicious work of), even a siege by Caeser himself! They’re crazy, these Egyptians! And so starts Asterix’s antics in the land of the Nile. Arriving in Alexandria, Edifis’s rival, Artifis shows up, wanting in for half the reward and none of the risk. Without the slightest hesitation, off our hero Asterix, Obelix and his dog Dogmatix, and Getafix head, with an uneventful trip (sinking pirates doesn’t even warrant a mention at this point). And where better else to turn than a small village and it’s resident Druid Getafix. If he succeeds, he would be covered in gold, if he fails, crocodile dinnertime.

Of course, the task of building the palace in Alexandria falls to Edifis. Cleopatra responds that she will have a palace suitable for Caeser built in three months. Caeser argues that as the conquered, the Egyptians are long past their prime. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium… Far away in Egypt, Cleopatra and Julius Caeser are disagreeing about who is the greater civilisation, the Egyptians or the Romans. Well not entirely! One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. For simplicity, we’ll stick to the English names, so Getafix rather than Panoramix. There are many Asterix movies but let’s go back to 1968’s Asterix and Cleopatra ( Astérix et Cléopâtre ). This week’s It’s In Forrin returns to France to commemorate the passing of Albert Uderzo, the co-founder and illustrator of the Astérix series in collaboration with René Goscinny.
